Window Attachments
What are
Window Attachments
Whilst not something you’d immediately associate with any thermal improvement to your home it’s useful to remember that energy efficient window attachments can really make a difference in certain circumstances and help in reducing energy consumption and maintaining the temperature in your home.
By window attachments we’re talking about curtains, blinds, shutters and the like,
We’re not going to go into too much detail – just enough to get you thinking and considering if they could make a difference – especially if you’re windows are single glazed, old or draughty and you’re not in a position to upgrade them as yet.
Consider solid shutters, thermal blinds or thermal curtains or, better still, consider layering them up for even greater effect.

Window Attachments Example
Can window attachments really make a difference to energy efficiency?
The level of impact is going to depend of the quality of the windows they are attached to.
You’re going to notice the impact of heavy weight thermal curtains when they cover an old, single glazed, draughty window – less so if they’re covering a modern energy efficient, properly installed, double glazed unit.
They can actually conserve energy in two ways:
- Keeping curtains, blinds and shutters closed can help prevent internal heat loss through the windows during winter months
- Likewise they can provide shade and help keep the cost of keeping your house cooler during summer months
What type of window attachment is best as an energy efficiency measure?
All depends what you’re covering and looking to achieve – the main choices are:
Energy-Efficient Blinds
Reflect Heat away from the property in summer – less energy used in keeping the house cooler. Preserve Heat in winter – Reduced energy consumption in heating the property
Shutters
A flexible choice – you the option to keep the frames closed and draughts out, but, by positioning the louvres to suit you, you can still allow the natural light in.
Curtains
A great draught excluder preventing warm air escaping in winter which can also help keep your home cooler in summer by reducing the amount of warm air transferred in.
Layer Up
For maximum impact however you should consider layering up blinds or shutters with curtains – a double energy efficiency whammy which can look great too!
Are grants available for window attachments?
No – you’re not going to get any financial help towards the cost but it needn’t cost much as there’s something for every budget … pre-loved curtains and blinds can still look amazing and prove effective for very little cost.
